The Victoria Highlanders FC continue to expand their brand and their commitment to elite level training, coming to an agreement to align their academy system with Shel Brodsgaard's Island Keeper Clinics. The Successful goalie training school has been a fixture in Victoria for over twenty years.
"The Highlanders Academy are very excited to formally align our program with IKC as they have been very instrumental in the development of our young goalkeepers over the past three years. I have known Shel Brodsgaard for more than twenty years and he operates a very successful academy for goalkeepers on the Island and will add another element of professionalism as we build our development programs in the region. We expect to continue producing top quality keepers that will make the organization and the island proud." said Highlanders GM and Vice President Drew Finerty.
The Highlanders FC Island Keeper Clinic is a special training program designed and implemented especially for elite level one-on-one training. The program is overseen by IKC's Program Director and Highlanders Goalkeeping consultant Shel Brodsgaard and Highlanders Head Goalkeepers Coach, Bob Stankov and provides development programs for young goalkeepers.
"It's a natural fit" says Stankov of the new, formal relationship between VHFC and IKC. "IKC has been instrumental in providing goaltenders and training for the Highlanders with four of the top six goalies in our club Men's and Women's Teams) coming directly from IKC." Brandon Watson, Hide Ozawa, Elliot Mitrou, and Tanya Jones have all seen action for the Highlanders First Team's at some point last season, with Watson playing the majority of matches for the PDL men. "That's not even counting the goaltenders that have left Victoria" said Stankov, noting that the program has helped players move on to higher levels of football. "Simon Thomas has moved on the Whitecaps First Team, Sean Melvin is with the Whitecaps Residency, and of course Danny." Stankov is referring to IKC alumnus Danny Paton Cavanagh, who has signed a pro contract with Dundee FC in Scotland, quite a coup for an academy operating out of a small region like Victoria.
IKC also introduces the use of technology in a variety of ways to the benefit of all participants in our programs. IKC is your one-stop shop for goalkeeper education, team training and development, making connections in the goalkeeper training community, and making progress in the game!
IKC staff and students continue to achieve success in the game. IKC has produced several Youth National Team Goalkeeper Coaches utilized by the Canadian Soccer Association and Goalkeeper Coaches working with Professional Organizations. IKC has landed goalkeepers into professional playing environments, as well as, placing goalkeepers into scholarships in both Canada and the United States.
