Reserves Hand Vic United 7-0 Drubbing

Posted on: Wednesday, July 7, 2010

The Victoria Highlanders FC Reserves blasted Victoria United 7-0 at Bear Mountain Stadium on Wednesday night in their last home game of the season.  The two sides kick off again on Saturday at Royal Athletic Park at 2:30pm.

Andrew Ravenhill collected a hat-trick in the second half after Ben Leggett and Davis Stupich gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead at half-time and substitute Pelle Campbell added two of his own in the merciless 7-0 dumping of their crosstown rivals.  Chris Arnett had two assists and Victoria United goalkeeper Blake Ridley had a busy night, making six saves.  It should be interesting to see how United will rebound on Saturday; after a poor performance at Bear Mountain Stadium one would think they will be looking put on a better show at home.

The Victoria Highlanders Reserves and Victoria United are two teams heading in opposite directions as far the Pacific Coast League tables are concerned with the Highlanders looking to lock up third place and possibly grab the second position and United only one point from the cellar.  The Highlanders lads can drastically improve their playoff chances with full points against Vic United in this week’s home and home series - which will cap-off the Highlanders’ season - as either a second or third place finish will ensure they do not face first place Vancouver Thunderbirds in the first round.  United are not to be counted out, however, as they managed a draw against the Highlanders in their only meeting so far this season and, having been out of the playoff race for sometime now, will undoubtedly embrace the role of spoiler for the remainder of their season.  Pride is a powerful thing and neither side wants to give up the crown of “Victoria’s Team” in this Coast League version of the Victoria Derby.

NOTE: The return leg of this home and home series goes Saturday, July 10 at 2:30 pm @ Royal Athletic Park.
